DAY83REDUX – Towers & Trees – Montreal

REDUX of Video#83 of 1000
Towers and Trees – Wandering Ivy
Recorded in a stairwell ‘backstage’ at St. Andrew’s Church
in Victoria before the VIMA’s on Apr. 28, 2013 in HD (1080p on XA10).

“Towers and Trees came out recently and got everyone at Backstage Lounge on Vancouver’s beautiful Granville Island all riled up on the dance floor (yes…I can say this, I was there dancing!)

Rod Matheson came out and saw them as well then followed up to get this sweet video of the whole band together.  Adrian Califour was a dynamic presence at the Backstage venue and he sure is here in this video too!

Towers and Trees hail from Victoria, BC and have been making their mark on the Island.  They were nominated in 2013 for the Vancouver Island Music Awards “Island Song of the Year” and “Island Pop/Rock Album or EP of the Year”.  Victoria has been fertile soil for many music bands and I bet the roots Towers and Trees are setting down there will hold strong and keep them growing.

And yes, that is a baby “An&Ben” growing that you can see in this here video…Congratulations guys!  It was lovely to hear the whole band telling us all at Backstage Lounge about their upcoming new member!  Lotsa love was shared.  Thanks Towers and Trees.  I look forward to hearing you again and in the meantime I am going to put this video on repeat, repeat, repeat…

Victoria-based artist Adrian Chalifour has been making and performing music for the better part of the last decade in Victoria, Vancouver and Kamloops, B.C. A gifted performer and songwriter at heart, Adrian has drawn listeners and audiences over the years with his infectious live energy and stories of love, redemption, the search for home and the West Coast.

Adrian has had the privilege of collaborating and sharing the stage with some of B.C.’s most talented artists, including Jean-Paul Maurice, Aidan Knight, Vince Vaccaro, Acres of Lions, Versa, Mike Edel and more. With Towers and Trees, he hopes to continue his love affair with West Coast and Canadian music, and find/build a community of collaborators with whom to create and celebrate music and song.

In January 2012, Adrian teamed up with seasoned Victoria musician (and friendly neighbour) Ben Lubberts to begin recording a six-song Towers and Trees EP, with a target release of Spring 2012.  Ben did a short set to open the show with his wife An.  I will be posting a song from them sometime soon…

Thereafter’s reply that their music is ‘prog-trad’ is part self-deprecation, part guilty pleasure. They are open to exploring anything with their roots instrument base, anything that is except for a concept album, what with punk having happened.

With flute, fiddle, cello, cajon and guitar and members from the celtic, jazz and classical traditions, Thereafter are able to range far and wide in their exploration of world music and the vivid arrangements of their original songs and instrumentals.

Thereafter is:
Neil Hammond – Guitar and Singing
Keona Hammond – Flute and Singing
Annie Brown – Fiddle
Shanto Acharia – Cello
Ben Brown – Cajon and Other Percussion

DAY386 – Bill Bourne – Clap for the Healer

Video #386 of 1000
Bill Bourne – Clap for the Healer
For Sunday, April 21, 2013
Recorded downstairs at St. James Hall before Bill’s album release concert
for “Songs From A Gypsy Caravan” at the Rogue Folk Club
on Apr. 18, 2013 in HD (1080p on XA10).

Bill Bourne was raised in a musical family in rural Alberta. When he was 2 years old, he was known to sleep behind the piano at country dances. His parents played dance music in community halls in beautiful farming country.  The love of nature and of music and of people gathering for celebration has been with him for his whole life.

I met Bill after his soundcheck for the premiere of his “Songs From The Gypsy Caravan” CD at the Rogue Folk Club and took him downstairs to the basement of St. James Hall to record this song.  There was a man practicing martial arts in the back-ground (who really loved Bill’s performance) so that’s what the subtle ‘swishing’ sound is – the sound of his feet.

“The Brothers Arntzen play sweet and hot music for dancers and listeners alike.  Raised in the New Orleans style of jazz music by their grandpa Lloyd Arntzen, the brothers have developed their own, joyful sound derived from this musical tradition.

The Brothers are on a mission to educate people aged 6 to 95 about this kind of music. Playing in schools, dance halls, pubs, clubs, living rooms, and in the streets, the Arntzen’s demonstrate that jazz was conceived in joy, and like to make sure that the audience has as much fun as they do.” (By )

DAY311 – Sidney York – Math and Fractions

https://www.facebook.com/SidneyYork

“Part glitzy pop, part avant-pop, and part fun”  Sidney York began as the long-distance relationship of three former band geeks: opera singer Brandi Sidoryk (“Sid”), oboist Sheryl Reinhardt, and bassoonist Krista Wodelet.  Brought together in part by high school honor band, and in part by a serendipitous connection on a certain friendly Canadian airline, they join forces to create an avant-pop renaissance of the unusual instruments they grew up with. Sidney York’s three frontwomen deliver a live experience that rollercoasters from bubbly, clap-and-whistle-along pop to sweet and sexy vocal harmonies, and their powerful onstage presence always leaves audiences wanting more.

Named Best Untapped Newcomer at the Calgary Folk Fest, Sidney York has also performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, South Country Fair, Canadian Music Fest, NXNE, and Vancouver Jazz Fest, and has shared the stage with notable artists Chad VanGaalen, Rich Aucoin, and Carly Rae Jepsen.   From the opera stage and the orchestra pit into indie music, Sidney York is proof that band geeks are cool.

Pete Bamboo is an eight-piece ska fusion band from Schaffhausen.  The release of the EP “Burns Like Onions” in 2012 marked the band’s 10th year.

After the band’s formation in 2002 and the first concerts in 2003, 2004 and 2005 EPs “Welcome” were (2006) and “Fasten Your Seat Belt” was published (2007), which the band in the Swiss and South German ska scene made known . Dozens gigs were played with many big bands in the scene (New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, The Specials, The Planet Smashers, Skarface, Sagarroi, Jahcoustix, Moskovskaya, Plenty Enuff, Alaska, Fusion Square Garden, Nguru, Open Season, etc.). 2007, however, was followed by a nearly two-year hiatus, as various professional reasons Petes pulled into the distance and could not continue playing. Thanks to additional, motivated musicians Pete Bamboo was first time in 2010 on the stage again, and since 2011 they play in today’s lineup.

DAY309 – Leon Bibb – Look Over Yonder

Video #309 of 1000
Leon Bibb – Look Over Yonder
Recorded live at St. Andrew’s Wesley Church on Feb. 1, 2013
in HD (1080p on XA10).
http://leonbibb.com/
www.facebook.com/pages/Leon-Bibb

This is a very special (impromptu) moment during an amazing concert where 90yr old Leon Bibb is moved by the moment to go off program and offer a song directly from his heart!   When he was done the roof blew off with a standing ovation from the capacity crowd. Frankly, it’s moments like this that I’m doing this project for and always feel grateful when I manage to be in the right place at the right time (which isn’t easy in a town overflowing with music on a nightly basis)!

Leon grew up in Kentucky, studied voice in New York, and worked on Broadway. His career began when he became a featured soloist of the Louisville Municipal College glee club as a student.  He has lived in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada since 1969.

Bibb was born in Louisville, Kentucky and was one of the performers at the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959. He also had his own NBC television talk show.  During the late-1950s and early-1960s, Bibb was one of a number of American entertainers, such as his good friend Paul Robeson, who were blacklisted for alleged ties to left-wing groups and causes. In 1963, Bibb traveled to Mississippi to join Dick Gregory and others in the fight against racial segregation in the United States.

Despite that setback, Bibb continued to perform, and around 1963 or ’64 he was featured singing on the national TV show, Hootenanny, on The Ed Sullivan Show and performed with Bill Cosby on tours.  His a cappella vocals blend his classical, spiritual and blues influences.  He is the father of the Helsinki, Finland based acoustic blues singer/songwriter Eric Bibb and was honored with the Order of British Columbia in 2009.  He is also an inductee to the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, a recipient of the 2002 City of Vancouver Cultural Harmony Award, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the Harry Jerome Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2009.

I will be featuring a song from this inspiring concert (by a different artist) every Sunday in February to celebrate Black History Month.

DAY307 – Listener – Wooden Heart

On their first visit to Vancouver, the only Canadian stop on this tour, in the dark room (the size of my living room) crammed beyond capacity with a young/pushy/squishy crowd, I was able to film this unique ‘live’ gem with arms aloft while being pressed into the wall beside the stage…

“You’ve probably never heard anything quite like Listener. Comprised of vocalist and lyricist Dan Smith and musician Chris Nelson as composer, this dynamic duo came together in 2007 (although Listener date back as a Dan Smith solo project back to 2002) in Arkansas and have been pioneering what they have coined “Talk Music” a wide spanning style that features a heavy vocal element that is neither screamed, sang, or just spoken. The lyrics are more like ranting poetry.  A uniquely refreshing and powerful sound.”

DAY306 – Mete Pills – Finding Emo

Mete Pills – Finding Emo
Recorded live at the Rickshaw Theatre on Jan. 26, 2013 in HD (1080p on XA10).

https://www.facebook.com/metepills

“An intelligent and effective mixture of 90′s style post-punk, indie-pop and alternative, it’s hard to place just where in the spectrum this Vancouver quartet should be. They’ve been called everything from “alterna-punk” to “the West’s answer to Les Savy Fav”, from “Dream-Punk” to “a version of The Smiths with balls” and just about everything in between.

Mete Pills came together in the spring of 2010, recorded their self titled EP that winter and kept gigging along-side bands like The Shrine, Pangea, Mean Jeans and Anchoress all the way through. The next summer saw them head into The Hive Creative Labs with producer jesse Gander(Japandriods, The Pack A.D) to record their latest effort “Ill Feet EP” which is garnering them some new-found attention and even saw them appear on multiple Top Ten lists for 2012 in Vancouver.   Expect a lot from Mete Pills in 2013.”

DAY305 – Daniel Romano – On the Banks of Trilliums

Video #305 of 1000
Daniel Romano – On the Banks of Trilliums
Recorded live at Neptoon Records on Jan. 28, 2012 in HD (1080p on XA10).
http://danielromanomusic.com/
http://danielromano.bandcamp.com/

“Daniel Romano is making country music.  “Sleep Beneath the Willow” (Daniel’s sophomore release following June 2010′s critically acclaimed “Workin’ for the music man”) mixes timeless songwriting with late ’60s, AM country arrangements baring the influence of artists such as Lee Hazelwood and Musicor era George Jones. The album is constructed around flourishes of fiddle, honky-tonk guitar, pedal steel, and sweeping harmonies courtesy of a trio of Toronto singers: Misha Bower (The Bruce Peninsula), Tamara Lindeman (The Weather Station), and Lisa Bozikovic. The songs are stories of regret, sorrow, love, and yearning: the stuff of life. They tell of ex-wives, bluebirds, and finding the strength to do the right and proper thing. It’s a big, warm sound.

Approaching his music like a true craftsman, Daniel produced, engineered, and performed the majority of the instruments on Sleep Beneath the Willow. It was recorded to two inch tape in his home studio in Welland, ON.

Daniel has a platinum record for his production work with City and Colour and a Juno Nomination for graphic design. For the past seven years he has performed in the critically acclaimed rock band, Attack in Black. Sleep Beneath the Willow was released on April 5th 2011 on You’ve Changed Records, the label Daniel runs in partnership with Steven Lambke (Baby Eagle).”
