My favourite version of this song is from Long John Baldry’s 1971 album “It Ain’t Easy” (entitled “Black Girl”) featuring Kathi MacDonald on back-up vocals. It is a centuries-old American folk song most associated with Lead Belly, though covered by the likes of Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Dolly Parton and Nirvana.
