Today is my birthday, so I had to decide if I wanted to post a song for me today. This is a moment from a couple years ago that I was proud to catch on ‘tape’ (even if it was only my small Sony camera). Everybody knows this song, covered by so many great artists over the years (including Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis Jr., Neil Diamond, Arlo Guthrie, Billy Joel, Elton John, Don McLean, Harry Nilsson, Frank Sinatra, Cat Stevens) that is has become an American Classic. But this is no ordinary cover because David was Jerry Jeff Walker’s band when this song was written and he tells us the story of ‘who’ the song’s about. Gave me shivers.
